CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
SIHU CAME TO when the wagon she was being towed in hit a large rock, smacking her limp head against the bars that she was tied to. She blinked the world into sight. Nothing to my back but bars. Good. She tried to move her hands, but they were bound behind her, arms through the bars. Her other cohabitants came into view. There were two, and they looked dangerous.
One was a woman with blonde hair that fell around her in tangled knots. She had clearly spent weeks without a bath. That didn't matter as much as the makeshift leather armor she wore. From what Sihu understood, those who wore armor were asking for a fight. She was wiry, with sporadic scars on her face, and a significant scar running down her right forearm, the one place the leather armor didn't extend. The only fresh wound was a bruise that covered the entire left side of her face. Once she saw Sihu looking at her, she snorted and spit some snot on the floor in front of her. The sense Sihu got from the woman was cruelty.
Next to her was a mammoth of a man. He took up three times the space of the woman sitting next to him. He was covered in red hair, exemplified by a beard that reached to his waist. He wore no armor, or a shirt for that matter. He was all muscle. From his posture to the look in his eyes he was all defiance.
The woman spoke. âListen, witch. You stay on your side of the cart, and weâll leave you be. But, if you try your sorcery on us, youâll get to know how my associate got the name Radley Ragdolls.â
The brute gave Sihu a nod and then continued to stare in defiance at the world.
Sihu didn't respond but just kept studying them. They weren't bound. "How'd you get them to take off your bindings?"
âWe arenât witches. We donât need to be bound. We canât cast spells with our hands.â
Sihu rolled her eyes. She wanted to refute the claim that she was a witch, but having these two fear her seemed to be a good thing. She stood, sliding her arms up the bars, and looked over the front boards. The cart was being pulled by a black horse driven by a man decked out in all black. Great. People with titles to their names, and a captor who is obsessed with looking like Death. Why am I stuck with the most dramatic people?
Sihu continued in silence, putting on her most intimidating face. As they trundled along, the other two whispered and glance at her periodically.
As dusk approached, the cart came to a stop. The man draped in black tossed Radley a set of shackles.
âBind the witch after I untie her.â
Sihu felt her bonds loosen, and she pulled her hands through the bars and massaged her wrists. Radley stayed back, cautious to approach. What do they think I am? Sihu massaged her wrists before holding them out to Radley.
